Relationships & Sex Education

Relationships & Sex Education For Autistic Young People

For many autistic pupils, Sex and Relationship lessons are confusing, overwhelming and full of ambiguity. They may struggle with the way you explain sex and relationships, and struggle to make informed decisions, stay safe and develop good self-esteem unless information is presented in a way that makes sense to them. Autistic pupils often need a more personal and adapted approach to learning about relationships and growing up.
This course takes leading research into puberty, sexuality and autism, and looks at the issues that are common in the pupils we work with. Then we will explore a structured programme that can be implemented alongside your school scheme of work and look at how we can build in the foundational knowledge and understanding that autistic pupils need.
The course will cover:
  • Exploring what we know about autism and relationships, growing up, gender and sexuality. (including the ‘double empathy problem’ by Prof Damian Milton)
  • A Five stage programme of RSE for pupils with ASC.
  • How to resource and implement RSE support for autistic pupils in your school.
  • Working together – supporting and listening to parents, finding autistic role models.
  • Time to share, discuss, problem solve and look at resources.
