How To Write Social Stories
This course will teach you how to write a social story, how to personalise them and when and when not you should use them with autistic pupils. You will write your own story and receive a copy of Lynn McCann’s book - “Stories that Explain” a collection of over 60 editable social stories for you to use in your setting. This course is suitable for teachers, SENCOs, TAs, parents and anyone working with autistic young people.

Primary, Secondary and Special school staff. Parents and other agencies who work with autistic children and young people.
All attendees will receive a copy of “Stories that Explain - Social Stories for Children with Autism” Published by LDA Learning April 2018 by Lynn McCann. With over 60 editable stories covering KS2-KS3 children and young people with guidance on how to adapt them for the individual child.

What a Social Story is not, looking at examples.
How a Social Story is structured, the different types of sentences and how to write them.
Thinking about the goals and titles of a Social Story.
Discussing the purpose of illustrations, additional sentence types and language used in a Social Story.
How to present and set out a Social Story.
How to use Social Stories with your child or young person.
Writing your own story to take away with the support of Lynn McCann.
Lynn is the author of "Stories that Explain" (a collection of social stories for primary children) and has been writing social stories for over 12 years. This course teaches you how to write a social story using the specific structure advocated by Carol Gray. You will learn how to spot an ineffective social story and how to collect the right information to form your story focus. The day includes writing a story for a child you know, guided by Lynn.
